The Marion Barthelme Literary Prizes
A writer, an inspiration to emerging writers, a respected and beloved leader in the Houston community, a vibrant, warm, generous, and supportive board member, host, and friend: this barely begins to describe the late Marion Barthelme. The Friends of Marion Barthelme are coming together to establish three literary prizes that honor Marion’s passion for the literary arts, her 21-year tenure on the Inprint Board of Directors, her unwavering commitment to the graduate students at the University of Houston Creative Writing Program (CWP) and Gulf Coast: A Journal of Literature and Fine Arts, and her dedication to Inprint and other community programs in which CWP students play a key role. We anticipate paying out the funds we raise for 10 years or more, as this fund will provide direct support for the prizes and is not an endowment. The prizes are:
The Inprint Marion Barthelme Prize, an annual $10,000 juried prize for a graduate student at the UH Creative Writing Program that has both literary and service components.
The Inprint Marion Barthelme Gulf Coast Award, an award of at least $1,000 given to a leading member of the editorial staff of Gulf Coast: A Journal of Literature and the Fine Arts.
The Inprint Marion Barthelme Rice Literary Prize, an annual juried creative writing prize of $5,000 for an undergraduate student at Rice University.
Your tax-deductible gift or sustaining pledge will ensure that Marion’s passion for the literary arts continues to enrich our community and will nurture the best of emerging writers to whom she dedicated her own immeasurably generous life. Gifts of any size are welcome. Thank you in advance for your generous tribute to Marion’s memory and your support of the written word.
