Inprint's programs, events, and educational activities focus on creative writing and reading and provide something for everyone.
The Inprint Brown Reading Series, now in its 29th season and presented in association with the Alley Theatre, Brazos Bookstore, and the UH CWP, features the world’s great writers on stage, at little or no cost to the public. Through the years, the series has featured over 300 writers, including 4 Nobel Prize winners, 41 Pulitzer Prize winners, and 42 National Book Awards. All of the authors give on-stage readings, followed by an interview, and a book sale and signing where audience members can meet the authors. Many of the visiting writers also give craft talks on the UH campus, which are free and open to the public. All Readings are free for students and senior citizens.
Cool Brains! Inprint Readings for Young People, launched in spring 2007, presents popular teen and children’s writers. Authors give lively presentations of their works, followed by a book sale and signing, where families can meet the authors.
Inprint Book Club, led by a knowledgeable local writer, offers lively discussions on works by authors featured in the Inprint Brown Reading Series, as well as other works of interest to the community.
Inprint Writers Workshops, considered Houston’s “Best Place for Aspiring Writers” (Houston Press) and led by accomplished local authors in fiction, poetry, personal essay, memoir, and the novel, help aspiring writers to hone their skills and prepare work for publication.
A year-round Youth Writing Residency provides after-school classes and activities for at-risk youth at a local community center.
Teachers-as-Writers Workshops fill a gap in teacher training, providing poetry, fiction, and nonfiction workshops that sharpen the writing skills of K-12 teachers from Houston-area schools.
Memoir workshops for senior citizens, led by skilled local writers, revive memories and preserve community and family histories. Currently workshops are running in Fifth Ward’s Finnigan Park Center, Lincoln Park Community Center, Talento Bilingue de Houston, and at the Jewish Community Center.
Gulf Coast: A Journal of Literature & Fine Arts, underwritten by Inprint and based at UH, is a national magazine that publishes the work of established and emerging writers and Houston artists.
Support for emerging and established writers enhances local and national literary life. Inprint provides annual fellowships and prizes for graduate students at the UH CWP—close to $2 million dollars have been awarded since 1983—and has also established at UH an endowed chair in creative writing. As a result, the UH CWP was ranked #2 by U.S. News & World Report in its assessment of the nation’s creative writing programs, UH CWP students and alumni have published more than 150 books, and faculty writers have received, among other honors, the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and MacArthur Foundation “genius” fellowships.
Collaborations with many Houston organizations bring the literary arts to a broader and more diverse audience, including programs over the years with the Alley Theatre, Asia Society Texas, Arte Público Press, Blaffer Gallery, DiverseWorks, First Friday Reading Series, Greater Houston Area Writing Project, Houston Community College, Houston Grand Opera, Jewish Community Center, The Menil Collection, Nuestra Palabra, The Rothko Chapel, Society for the Performing Arts, Stages Theatre, Texas Southern University, UH, UH-Downtown, The Women's Home, and Writers In The Schools.
