Susan Cooper is the author of the bestselling five-book fantasy series The Dark Is Rising, which includes Over Sea, Under Stone; The Dark Is Rising; Greenwitch; The Grey King; and Silver on the Tree. Winner of a Newbery Medal, a Newbery Honor Award, and two Carnegie Honor Awards, in 2012 she also won the American Library Association’s prestigious lifetime Margaret A. Edwards Award for The Dark Is Rising series. The books have become classics and have sold millions of copies worldwide. Psychology Today writes, "Susan Cooper is one of the few contemporary writers who has the vivid imagination, the narrative power, and the moral vision that permit her to create the kind of sweeping conflict between good and evil that lies at the heart of all great fantasy. Tolkien had it. So did C. S. Lewis. And Cooper writes in the same tradition."

She comes to Houston to share her new novel Ghost Hawk, selected by Time magazine as a Summer Arts Preview Choice. The novel is set at the time of the first interactions between Native Americans and white settlers. The fates of Little Hawk, the narrator, and John Wakely become irreversibly entwined in the dance between tolerance and intolerance. Booklist in a starred review says, “Cooper has written a richly plotted, lyrical, and near-epic novel .... this is simply an unforgettable reading experience." A Publishers Weekly starred review describes it as a "Well-researched and elegant historical fantasy ... Cooper demonstrates, as Little Hawk says, ‘Change is made by the voice of one person at a time.’ ”

Cooper’s other children’s books include Victory, King of Shadows, The Boggart, Seaward, and many others. She has also written books for adults, films, a Broadway play, and a screenplay.
